Record and summarise a meeting

Updated Sep 15, 2026

The Meetings app records a conversation, transcribes it, and pulls out a summary, the decisions that were made, and a checklist of action items - so you don't have to take notes while you're in the meeting.

Recording

Open Meetings and choose Record meeting. The first time, your browser will ask for microphone access - allow it to start capturing audio.

If the meeting is happening in a video call open in another browser tab, turn on Also capture tab/system audio before you start. Your browser will ask you to choose what to share; picking the call's tab lets Meetings hear both sides of the conversation, not just your own microphone.

While recording, a live caption preview appears at the bottom of the screen in supported browsers, so you can see that it's picking up audio. Choose Stop & finish when the meeting ends, or Discard to throw the recording away instead.

What happens after you stop

A moment after you stop, the meeting is transcribed and summarised. You'll see:

  • A summary - a few sentences recapping what the meeting covered.
  • Decisions - anything that was explicitly settled.
  • Action items - things someone was asked to do, with who it was assigned to when that was clear from the conversation.
  • The full transcript, which you can search.

If summarization isn't available on your plan or isn't configured, Meetings still does its best to pull obvious action items straight out of the transcript, so you're never left with nothing.

Turning results into work

Next to each action item is an add button that creates the matching task in Reminders in one click - there's also an "add all" option if you'd rather send the whole list at once. Next to each attendee is a similar button that adds them to Contacts. You can also type in an attendee by hand if the recording didn't catch someone's name.

Sharing and exporting

Share creates a link anyone can open to read the summary and transcript, without needing an account - useful for sending notes to someone who wasn't there. The link works for 30 days.

Export downloads the whole meeting - summary, decisions, action items and transcript - as a plain text file you can keep or forward.

Limits

How many minutes you can record each month depends on your plan; recording isn't available on the free plan. If you reach your monthly limit partway through a recording, Meetings will let you know and stop accepting new audio, though you can still finish and review whatever was captured before the limit was reached.
