What does it need on my computer?

Node.js 18 or newer and a folder for the agent's file tools. To run Claude Code or Codex jobs on your subscription, that client must be installed and signed in on the same machine.

Can it touch files outside the folder I chose?

No. File tools are confined to that folder, and shell commands run only if they are on the allowlist you pass with --allow.

Does it cost anything?

The runner is free and open source. A job uses your computer's CPU and your own AI provider key or subscription, never cloud sandbox hours.
